Why do Intelligent People Still Believe in Religion? 32: Danger of Hell Fire!

The number one issue I have people seeking advice for on my channel is the issue of guilt or terrible fear over doubt even when they logically know their religion is bull I've talked and given advice to many people who have in the back of their mind, or moments of emotion that they get scared to death of what if they are wrong? What if god really is real and they find out they are wrong when they die burning in hell for eternity? The religious of course have their own explanation

It is obviously evidence that their belief is real because you KNOW it is true you just want to deny it It is their god trying to push you to do whats right, it is your conscience trying to make you do what you know is right, and you are blatantly disobeying and should be punished for even questioning it How do we tackle this issue? First off, lets look at the evidence Do people raised Christian get overwhelming fear that Islam might be right? I did growing up think on the rare occasion about what if I'm following the wrong religion and the Egyptian religion is possibly right What if I die and Anubis weighs my heart and my soul get eaten by Amut for not paying homage to their gods? This I passed off as temptation from Satan and easily got over it

People who have had brief encounters with religion tend to have the same moments of faith Kind of like the feeling of uneasiness of did I leave the stove on or what if an asteroid is heading toward earth? And then assuming your can use logic you figure out a way to destress your fears People raised in the religion have it so much worse What causes this? Lets go all the way back to the beginning of observable psychology Pavlov's dogs are the key to this irrational fear

When a bell rang the dogs would begin to salivate This is called psychological conditioning The food was primary conditioner Their bodies produced more saliva when they smelt food to prepare them for better digestion The bell was the secondary conditioner, it had nothing to do with salivation and making saliva did not have any benefits to a dog when a bell rang but when the brain linked bell=food then it became useful some of the time

Conditioning studies have shown to be part of a wide span of human behaviors and even immune system responses and especially phobias Hellaphobia, or a fear of hell (made up word btw) is what every fundamentalist christian and Muslim has The little Albert experiment is a prime example of this kind of phobia A child was shown a rat and at the same time a loud startling noise This made the child cry

The child had no fear of the rat prior to it After a few times of this happening, just seeing the rat would induce a fear response from the child This was before medical ethics boards existed so this could not be done today Many children showed hysterical fear to white coats Photographers used to wear white coats and could get children to settle down by removing them

This is because doctors also wore white coats and doctors equaled shots This is one of the reasons why nurses will wear different colored scrubs instead of white coats Phobias are created for these reasons A phobia is defined as an irrational fear of something At some point in childhood, one or several traumatic experiences occurred causing one to be severally emotionally conditioned to uncontrollably fear an item or condition either directly or indirectly linked with that

Most of the times people have no memory of these traumas because they occurred during mental development Because of this is makes it very difficult and a lot of work and different attempts to overcome In terms of hellaphobia, there was not one extremely traumatic incident that made you fear it, but a continually repeated low level long term threat of everything you fear all put together I've been reading the book “Why Zebras don't get ulcers” by Robert Sapolsky One of the major reasons why animals don't get all of the same stress related diseases is because they don't have the mental capacity to worry about things and imagine bad things happening

Humans however do Humans can have the exact same stress responses to trauma happening as if the actual stress action happened The fear of dying is much worse than actually being dead Every time you do something bad, or question your faith in a fundamentalist family of church you are reminded of hell and it is an attempt to make you imagine the horrors of everything you fear or worse In other word psychologically, when worrying or fearing hell you are literally experiencing hell on earth

This negative stressor has some severely negative reactions and it links as a secondary response of doubt which induces this anxiety Under stress your neurons slow at responding to each other, your brain power switches to fight or fight mode When you are confronted with something that makes you doubt, it produces stress and makes you literally dumber You either try and get out of the discussion so you can run away and ignore what you just learned, or you get angry and use stupid attacks This also helps in the production of angry atheists

They can run away because they have the evidence, but to overcome their conditioned fear when someone uses their programmed mantras and threats of hell the new angry atheist fights because in rage instead of calm rational teaching and discourse to correct misunderstandings One of the reasons why ex-religious atheists can hit a stalemate in a debate they have all the evidence on their side Atheists who are not ex-religious like thuderf00t when he debated ray comfort may fail because their mind is blown by the stupidity and intellectual dishonesty they are being exposed to Recent study has shown that spanking reduces potential IQ by around 5-10 points There is also a link between religion having a 5 point drop in IQ

5 points is not a significant level but I will bet you that because of the emotional stress caused by the fear of hell especially as a growing child, if you made the study between atheists and non-punishment based religions(ie Buddhism, liberal Christianity) vs punishment based religions(IE fundamentalist Islam and Christianity) one would see a pretty significant IQ difference My next 2 videos in this series will discuss punishment and positive conditioners as well as methods for overcoming phobias used so that one can overcome their own hellaphobia Also to my psychology subscribers I am having trouble finding references on specific treatments of phobia, mostly generalizations on education and desensitization, I would like to know if there are alternate or more detailed resources for phobia treatment Besides of course, Scientology
